Roland Mayer has been trained in working in wood, stone and metal and his preferred medium is the monumental, symbolic sculpture. His works impress the observer with their dimensions and the clarity of the visual language that has been reduced to succinct and simple basic structures. The artist’s starting point is nature and he translates, for example, the movement of a choppy sea, the vortex form of the wind, the micro-structures of flora and fauna into an artistic language and gives them form. In addition to the sculptures, he creates installations. “Ausgesaugt“ (“Sucked Dry”) is the title of the installation that is displayed in one of the smaller rooms of the St. Urban Museum. The installation consists of an old iron tub and a kind of suction device with a water pump. It provides perceptions into human existence without portraying it directly. On the other hand, the constellation of the objects provides a kind of objective correlation for phenomena whose meaning activates a deeper dimension.
